NordVPN review, manual and guides

by Olivia Morelli - -

Many countries censor various websites that you might want to access. Luckily for you, a simple VPN subscription can be bought to unlock these sites. A VPN creates a secure tunnel between your computer (or any other device) and the Internet, and the connection is safely encrypted. In this way, your real IP address is hidden. Instead, an IP address of a server from another country is shown, making your browsing 100% anonymous.

Now your browsing won't be accessible to anyone, including your Internet Provider, hackers, or even the government responsible for all the bans. VPNs can also be used where the WiFi connection is not secured, and this is especially relevant with public WiFi services like those in cafes or malls.

NordVPN review

NordVPN is a very simple and reliable VPN service, which covers a wide geographical range of 62 countries and has more than 5000 servers.

Nord Virtual Private Network[1] is a great choice to those who want to visit sites that are unavailable in their own country.

Cybersecurity may seem very complex, but NordVPN makes it as easy as it gets. Cutting-edge technologies shield your Internet activity from hackers and malware, protect you on public Wi-Fi networks, and even block annoying ads.

NordVPN has clients software for Android[3], Windows, macOS, iOS, Android TV, Linux and browser extensions for Chrome and Firefox. The VPN service also supports Windows Phone, open-source and branded routers.

It took us about five minutes to install and run the VPN on our Windows test PC.

NordVPN includes various security and privacy features.

  • NordVPN secures user internet activity from hackers and malicious actors protect on public Wi-Fi and include Ad Blocker. In order to have the highest possible level of security, this VPN uses double data encryption. In other words, the data that goes between your device and the server is encrypted twice using Double VPN technology.
  • Privacy protection features ensure that no one can track users’ online activity. The features include a Strict no logs policy, Automatic Kill Switch, DNS leak protection, and Onion Over VPN.
  • NordVPN allows users to bypass geographical restrictions and censorship. It offers more than 5000 servers worldwide, Streaming, SmartPlay, P2P and speed features.
  • The VPN also offers apps across all the major platforms and multiple devices, as well as extensions for Chrome and Firefox browsers.

NordVPN features

NordVPN offers users superior privacy protections.

Paying with Bitcoin, users do not have to provide their real name. In addition, the company is registered in Panama which theoretically gives NordVPN excellent legal protection from nosy investigators.

One feature that can be essential is the Kill Switch. It basically disconnects your device from the Internet if the VPN gets turned off accidentally. If not for this feature, your device may instantly become vulnerable to cyber attacks or government surveillance once the service becomes unavailable. It is especially important if you are are a journalist or a political activist in a dangerous country.

NordVPN supports popular protocols, including L2TP/IPSec, OpenVPN, IKEv2, PPTP and SSTP.

NordVPN has servers that allow file sharing via P2P (Peer to Peer) websites. If you start using a file-sharing application, you will be automatically redirected to a server dedicated to P2P. This is done to distribute users in a manner which allows using the speed of the servers to maximum capacity. Other great VPNs that support P2P are VyprVPNBolehVPN, and TorGuard.

NordVPN Connect

NordVPN claims to offer its users security technology with a high-speed connection.

There are many factors that can impact the performance rate of a VPN service, including the Internet speed, level of encryption, the protocol being used, the distance to a chosen server and the firewalls or antivirus tools used.

We tested NordVPN in similar circumstances like any other tested VPN service and compared its’ results with baseline rates.

NordVPN demonstrated solid performance results with 34.7 Mbps download speed (36% lower than the baseline), the upload rate was about 17 Mbps, which is also 36% lower than the baseline. When it comes to latency, NordVPN had about 150% of impact in comparison to the baseline.

NordVPN demonstrated better than the average speed rates. However, it also needed couple reconnections in a 24 hour period.

Customer support

NordVPN provides users with customer support via live chat and email. It also claims to respond to user queries within 48 hours.

NordVPN also has a help webpage, which includes useful information and guides on getting started, billing, connectivity, general information, and FAQs section.

NordVPN for Android

User interface

NordVPN is beginner-friendly as the download, installation, and setup are easy and do not require any special knowledge. Some VPNs are quite difficult to set up and use, but this one has a nice and clear user interface.

The interface is consistent between the desktop and mobile version of the service. The main window displays a visual map with servers and locations available.

The final verdict

Even though the initial monthly price might scare some customers away, the loyal ones get a great deal with the long subscription plans. However, it seems that the service is really worth its price as it contains a lot of security enhancements in comparison to the current market.

Its high speed, a huge number of servers and its simplicity make it an obvious choice for both beginners and advanced users.
