Norton Security Premium offers all the mentioned features and also backs up important users information, includes 25 GB of automatic online backup and Premium Online Family Safety features.

LifeLock Standard and Norton Secure VPN. These tools can be added together with security software or purchased as standalone applications.

Even though Norton offers flexible plans, Kaspersky offers a more generous feature set.

Antivirus protection

Kaspersky and Norton both use popular antivirus technologies and combine a digital-signature matching engine with heuristic monitoring. Utilizing these two methods, the antivirus systems are capable of detecting both, known and previously unseen malware threats.

All suspicious items are sent to cloud-based servers for further investigation.

Kaspersky has detected all the threats we have installed in our test PC running Windows 10, while Panda missed some malicious samples.

The independent German-based AV-TEST testing lab[5] tested Kaspersky in its the most recent tests. Kaspersky demonstrated one of the best malware detection rates and detected 100% of both, zero-day malware attacks, including web and email threats and 100% of widespread and prevalent malware.

When it comes to Norton, the antivirus system also demonstrates superior scores.

On our test PC, Norton has detected all of the malware samples we had installed.

In addition, AV-TEST also tested the program in its the most recent antivirus test. According to the test results, Norton has detected 100% of zero-day malware attacks, including web and e-mail threats, and 100% of widespread and prevalent malware.

All in one, Kaspersky and Norton both offer superior malware detection rates.

System-performance impact and scans

According to our test results, Kaspersky Anti-Virus can slow down your system by a maximum of 10 percent, which is a perfect score.

In addition, AT-TEST also rated Kaspersky 5.5 out of 6.0, as it delivered better results than the industry average.

  • Slowing-down a system while launching popular websites – 36% (19%)
  • Impact on a system while downloading frequently-used applications – 0% (1%)
  • Impact on a system while launching standard software applications – 9% (8%)
  • Impact on a system during the installation of frequently-used applications – 13% (25%)
  • Impact while copying of files – 4% (3%)

Kaspersky Portection

The first scan took about 30 minutes, the subsequent scans were finished in less than ten minutes, which is pretty fast. In addition, its quick scan only took about 2 minutes to complete. During the full scan, the OpenOffice tool finished about 30% slower than the baseline, which is in the middle.

When we tested the resource usage of Norton, the antivirus demonstrated average results – the boot time was a bit slower in comparison to other products in the competition; however, it didn’t make a big impact. During the full scan, the application slowed down the system by 17%, which is not that much considering the program does a difficult job scanning every corner of the computer.

Norton was also tested by AV-TEST. According to the most recent test results, Norton Security has a minimal system-performance impact.

  • Slowing-down a system while launching popular websites – 10% (19%)
  • Impact on a system while downloading frequently-used applications – 0% (1%)
  • Impact on a system while launching standard software applications – 6% (8%)
  • Impact on a system during the installation of frequently-used applications – 25% (25%)
  • Impact while copying of files – 0% (3%)

Norton Scans

When it comes to scanning performance, the full system scan took almost an hour and 10 minutes, the quick system scan took almost 4 minutes. Users are able to limit scans to the most dangerous files, then the full system scan will be finished in less than half an hour.

As you can see Norton demonstrates better performance results and has a lower impact on a system.

User interface

Kaspersky has a modern design and the user interface is easy to use. However, despite this, there is an issue with navigation. If you move away from the Home screen, you will not have many choices – to use another feature, you will have to press ‘Return’ and only then you can choose another option.

Norton has a bright interface, which is very pleasing to the eye. The user interface and the dashboard look as if they are quite easy to navigate. The navigation will be easy for the average user, but if you are tech savvy and you are looking for advanced settings and additional options, you might have a hard time as there are a lot of pop-ups and a million of switches for the advanced user to deal with.

We found that Norton’s interface is actually more intuitive and comfortable.

Customer support

Kaspersky provides users with a very informative support webpage that includes Knowledge Base, How-to videos, forums, and FAQs. The support can be reached via My Kaspersky, email or phone.

When it comes to Norton, it also includes an informative support page. Users also can reach support team via live chat, social support, Remote Assistance. The page includes community forums, FAQs, manuals and other product related information.

Popularity

According to OPSWAT’s streamlined Windows Anti-malware Market Share Report, which includes the most recent data collected for 6 months from June to December, Kaspersky is in the seventh place with 6.65% of the market share, while Symantec Corporation is only in tenth place taking 3.27% of the market share.[6]

market share report

As you can see in the graph above, other popular products include Avast Software a.s, McAfee Inc., Malwarebytes, Bitdefender, ESET, Webroot, Safer Networking Ltd with SpyBot Search & Destroy, Avira.

The final verdict

Kaspersky is one of the best choices in the market. It offers superior 100% malware detection rates and great features with its plans. However, its interface could seem a bit confusing and it does not offer a VPN service.

Norton also demonstrates superior protection rates with a minimal impact on a system. Symantec is one of the biggest giants in the security software industry, offering quality and reputable products. Norton security software is a great choice if you would like to add identity protection service or a VPN.

Final thoughts

Kaspersky and Norton both provide superior antivirus protection.

The table below represents the latest results. As you can see Norton demonstrates a lower impact on a system and better performance rates.
