What you are getting: Main Features
We also want to compare what features providers are offering with each package.
As was mentioned before, Kaspersky offers Windows users various packages including Kaspersky Anti-Virus, Kaspersky Internet Security and Kaspersky Total Security. The antivirus provider also offers free antivirus, for those, who do not need any features.
- Kaspersky Anti-Virus includes basic features, such as Security, Performance and Simplified security management.
- Kaspersky Internet Security includes all the mentioned features, compatibility with PCs, Mac, and mobiles. It also adds privacy features and protects users while they are shipping or banking online.
- Kaspersky Total Security is a premium package by Kaspersky and also includes Parental Controls, Password Manager and File Protection.
Kaspersky also offers various tools, such as Kaspersky VPN service, Kaspersky Password Manager or Parental Controls for kids.
When it comes to ESET, the provider offers three packages.
- ESET NOD32 offers a limited feature set and covers basics, such as Anti-Phishing, Exploit Blocker, UEFI Scanner, Ransomware Shield, Free Support, Script-Based Attack Protection, and others.
- ESET Internet Security adds features such as Banking and Payment Protection, Firewall, Network Attack Protection, Parental Controls, and others.
- ESET Smart Security Premium adds extra premium features such as Password Manager and Secure Data.
Both antivirus packages are full-featured and capable of protecting the whole family and household. However, Kaspersky provides slightly more additional features and security, privacy and performance tools.
Kaspersky uses a traditional digital-signature matching engine and heuristic monitoring. By combining these two methods, the antivirus is capable of detecting both, known and zero-day malware threats. All suspicious items are sent to cloud-based Kaspersky's servers for further examination.
Kaspersky has detected all the threats we have installed in our test PC running Windows 10.
In addition, we have checked how it performed in bigger tests, such as AV-TEST. It is worth mentioning that Kaspersky demonstrated one of the best malware detection rates and detected 100% of both, zero-day malware attacks, including web and email threats and 100% of widespread and prevalent malware.
ESET also applies similar antivirus technology. The antivirus defenses start from a traditional malware signature-matching engine and heuristic monitoring. Anything suspicious is sent to the company’s cloud-based servers for further analysis.
ESET did not participate in the most recent tests conducted by AV-TEST. However, in the previous tests, ESET NOD32 detected 98.9% of zero-day malware attacks and 100% of widespread and prevalent malware.
As you can see, Kaspersky offers better malware detection rates.
|Protection agains 0-day malware attacks (web and email threats)||100%||98.9%|
|Detection of most common spread malware in last 4 years||100%||100%|
System-performance impact and scans
According to our test results, Kaspersky Anti-Virus can slow down your system by a maximum of 10 percent, which is a very good score in comparison to its competitors.
AT-TEST also rated Kaspersky 5.5 out of 6.0, as it delivered better results than the industry average.
- Slowing-down a system while launching popular websites – 36% (19%)
- Impact on a system while downloading frequently-used applications – 0% (1%)
- Impact on a system while launching standard software applications – 9% (8%)
- Impact on a system during the installation of frequently-used applications – 13% (25%)
- Impact while copying of files – 4% (3%)
When it comes to scanning performance, the first scan took about 30 minutes, the subsequent scans were finished in less than ten minutes, which is pretty fast. In addition, its quick scan only took about 2 minutes to complete.
We had no lags or interruptions while scanning our system using the program as it takes up no more than 9% of RAM memory. The scans are stable and accurate. Users can perform an initial full system scan, or choose from advanced scanning options – custom and removable media scans.
When it comes to ESET, we have to say that the antivirus solution is not a market leader in performance rates – the boot time takes a few seconds longer than the competition average.
However, ESET does not drain your system resources.
We have also checked AV-TEST results and noted that ESET demonstrated a pretty heavy impact on the system. Worth mentioning that ESET did not participate in the most recent test, so the data is taken from the previous tests:
- Slowing down a system when launching popular websites – 8% (13%).
- Impact on a system while downloading frequently-used applications – 8% (1%).
- Impact on a system while launching standard software programs – 66% (15%)
- Impact on a system while installing frequently-used programs – 40% (26%)
- Impact on a system while copying files 1% (3%)
ESET also causes no interruptions or lags during scans. As you can see the program demonstrates good but not perfect results.
All in one, Kaspersky demonstrates slightly better performance results and a lower impact on a system.
When it comes to interface, both programs are quite bright and modern-looking. However, Kaspersky has an issue with the navigation system. If you move away from the Home screen, you will not have many choices – to use another feature, you will have to press ‘Return’ and only then you can choose another option.
When it comes to ESET, the program has a convenient interface and a navigation system. Even though the text is relatively small on some of the settings and options, we had no problem while using the software.
This time, we would like to give ESET a credit. It is clear, straightforward and all the options are easy to access and adjust.
When it comes to Kaspersky, users can easily contact the support team via My Kaspersky, email or phone. In addition, for those, who prefer looking for information themselves are provided with a very informative support webpage that includes Knowledge Base, How-to videos, forums, and FAQs.
ESET also provide a customer support page. Users can find manuals, FAQs, knowledge base videos and find more security and product related information, listed by the product or problem.
We have also overviewed the brands' popularity according to OPSWAT’s streamlined Windows Anti-malware Market Share Report.
ESET appears in fifth place with 9.09% of the market share,
Kaspersky Lab is the seventh with 6.65% of the market share.
The final verdict
As you can see, Kaspersky antivirus is also one of the best choices in the market. The antivirus system detects 100% of malware, however, its system performance impact in the latest tests is only average.
When it comes to ESET, It really has everything that an average user would need from an anti-malware program. It also is popular among businesses ESET managed to design a user interface that is good enough for both beginners and advanced users.
According to the latest tests results and our experience using the programs, Kaspersky would be our first choice. Even though ESET is also a reliable and trustworthy solution, Kaspersky offers flawless antivirus protection with a minimal impact on a system. It also develops a number of security features and tools.
