The company is based in Toronto, Canada and is known for providing the back-end servers for the Opera browser VPN.[2]  Since 2017 SurfEasy was acquired by Symantec Corporation[3] – a security giant that provides users with cybersecurity software and services. However, even though SurfEasy is theoretically out of the reach of the US law enforcement search warrants, due to its Canadian-based location, the Symantec corporation is definitely subject to the US law agencies. SurfEasy VPN uses OpenVPN and IPsec protocols. The service has 500 servers in 28 countries and the number is still increasing. However, the free version and the cheaper version of the service allows users to connect in only 16 of them.

Let's test SurfEasyVPN and find out is it good

SurfEasy provides their clients with software for Windows, Macs, iPhones, iPads, Android devices, Opera and Google Chrome browsers and Amazon. However, users are not able to connect to the company’s servers without client software, which leaves out Linux boxes, Windows Phones, and routers. SurfEasy’s Windows installer package takes about 45 MB and it took us about ten minutes to download, install and connect to the SurfEasy VPN service, including setting up the account.

SurfEasy Installation

SurfEasy is not the cheapest selection but affordable to many users

SurfEasy VPN offers users three plans named Starter, Total and Ultra. The Starter plan is the SurfEasy VPN’s free limited version of the software which offers 500 MB of free data and covers up to five devices. The paid services include SurfEasy Total and SurfEasy Ultra. SurfEasy Total starts at $3.99 per month and offers unlimited data and tracker blocking for up to 5 devices. As it was mentioned before, the VPN service offers users the free version of the VPN. However, the free version is limited to 500 MB of data and enables users to increase the monthly’s data allowance by 250 MB by giving the company the email address. It also increases the data up to 500 MB more when each friend signs up. The paid version of SurfEasy includes the following features:

  • No-Log network. The company claims not to retain any logs related to its customers online, browsing and downloading activity.
  • Bank-grade encryption. SurfEasy uses bank-grade encryption in order to keep its customers’ information protected.
  • One click IP masking. Users allowed to switch their location with a single click.
  • Secure Torrenting with auto-enable protection.

As you can see it offers VPN basic features. It is great for those users, who do not want difficult VPN that offers many features that are never used. SurfEasy Mobile VPN

Data encryption and protection algorithms are fine

SurfEasy claims not to log any user activity including online, browsing or downloading. The VPN service is based in Canada, which is theoretically outside to the US law enforcement agencies, however, after 2017 acquisition, when SurfEasy VPN was acquired by the US-based security giant Symantec, it became a part of the US-based company, which is obviously a subject to US law. The company uses commonly-used OpenVPN and IPsec protocols in order to protect its customers’ data and provides superior protection.

Performance

We have tested the free version of SurfEasy VPN and it demonstrated worse than the average performance rates. The connection to one of the SurfEasy’s US-based servers took only about 5 seconds, which is not that bad, and the server’s latency took a reasonable amount of time about 41 milliseconds. However, when it comes to download and upload speed rates, the VPN transferred the data about 90% slower than the baseline and uploaded it about 65% slower. It is worth to mention, that only the Opera’s browser Free VPN service was slower than the SurfEasy VPN service.

Customer Support of SurfEasyVPN works with condident

The User interface is not the best part of this VPN

SurfEasy has a small interface on its desktop client application, however, it displays a map of the local area, the current IP address and a pull-down menu of connection points.

An average VPN service for an average price

SurfEasy VPN is a simple and affordable VPN service which provides reliable protections and basic VPN features. It includes a number of servers in 28 countries. However, its performance rates are lower than the average.
