Trend Micro and F Secure

Trend Micro Antivirus and Security

Trend Micro was developed by Japanese multinational cybersecurity company which was founded in Los Angeles, California, USA. The company delivers security software products for servers, cloud computing environments, consumers, and businesses.[1]

The company provides home users four versions of Antivirus and Security including Trend Micro Antivirus and Security, Trend Micro Internet Security, Trend Micro Maximum, and Trend Micro Premium Security.

Antivirus Protection

When it comes to Antivirus Protection the antivirus solution scans a system for malware signatures, constantly checks new software and uploads suspicious files to Trend Micro cloud servers where the further analysis is performed. Trend Micro uses the Trend Micro anti-malware engine which delivers advanced protection.

All Trend Micro versions combine browser extensions for Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Opera, and Safari. The browser extensions warn users about suspicious and malicious websites.

Trend Micro was tested by AV-Comparatives which noted that the software scored 100%. However, the antivirus got more false positives than other antivirus solutions in the market.

Security and Privacy

When it comes to Security and Privacy protection, Trend Micro offers anti-phishing system, Firewall Booster, protects users against spyware and adware. The software also blocks the installation of potentially unwanted programs (PUPs) and provides social media protection, including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and others.

Family Protection

For those who have children, Trend Micro provides with Parental Controls that can block objectionable material and limit screen time. In addition, selected applications, like games can be blocked during selected hours. Those who have a lot of devices at home Trend Micro would not be the best choice because it does not offer users unlimited plan, even though it offers packages from up to 10 devices.

System Impact

Even though the security application offers advanced malware protection, the software malware-detection engine has a huge impact on a system. As a result computer performance slows down. Trend Micro also uses a lot of system resources. What is more, a computer also slows down during scans.

User Interface

Trend Micro has not resizable user interface which can be moved around. The design looks modern and light, with grey and green details. The software is simple and easy to operate.

Trend Micro features

The Final Verdict

Trend Micro provides users with flawless malware protection, along with useful additional features, including password manager file encryption and shredding. In addition, it also can safeguard user social media privacy. All additional features depending on the package you want to purchase. However, the application’s system-performance is very heavy and uses a lot system’s resources.

Malware Protection Great
Impact on system performances Heavy
User Interface Looks modern, light, easy to navigate.
Additional useful features Yes

 F-Secure Anti-Virus

When it comes to F-Secure, the software is developed by a Finnish cybersecurity and privacy company. The company operates the market for over 25 years and has offices in 20 countries. F-Secure provides and retails antivirus, password management, endpoint security and other cybersecurity software and services.[2]

F-Secure provides individual users four versions of the software including F-Secure Anti-Virus, F-Secure Internet Security, F-Secure SAFE and F-Secure Total Security and Privacy.

F Secure Browsing Protection

Antivirus Protection

F-Secure’s all antivirus applications use the same anti-malware technology that includes a viral-signature scanner with own behavioral0monitoring tools to detect unknown malware. All suspicious signatures are sent to F-Secure’s Cloud to be analyzed. F-Secure offers a number of scan modes, users can minimize interruptions and notifications. However, there are not many useful additional features, and the programs lack an autopilot setting.

Even though the F-Secure scanning engine delivers advanced malware protection, it delivers a lot of annoying false positives.

Security and Privacy

F-Secure lacks many features, that are offered by other applications in the market. F-Secure does not have backup software, or online storage, no file shredder or file encryption, no anti-theft features. However, the application provides users with anti-spam features and secure search checks. F-Secure also provides browser extensions and banking protection.

Family Protection

F-Secure delivers Parental Controls together with a content blocker. Parents are able to set internet-usage time limits in one-hour blocks. Users also can use network checker which runs in the background and scans system for insecure passwords and unencrypted connections.

System Impact

Even though the scans are fast, the malware-scanning engine slows down system performance. According to Tom’s Guide, the application has one of the heaviest impact on the systems in the market.

F secure Scan

The interface looks fresh and modern. The dominated color is white with blue and dark blue accents. The interface is easy to operate, however, if you want to use an online F-Secure account you cannot get there from an interface, but have to use

The Final Verdict

F-Secure provides users with the advanced anti-malware system and an appealing interface. However, it doesn’t have many useful features. The price of F-Secure products is slightly lower than similar products in the market.

Malware Protection Very Good
Impact on system performances Heavy
User Interface Fresh looking, bright and simple to use.
Additional useful features Not many

To summarize

Trend Micro Antivirus and Security and F-Security Anti-Virus both offer advanced malware detection and removal rates and both have a heavy impact on the system that noticeably slows down system performances.

However, when it comes to useful features, Trend Micro provides users more features, while F-Security sticks to the basics. It is also worth to mention that F-Secure offers a lower price for the security solution for a few devices.

To sum up, we would say if you look for not expensive solutions for a few machines with only basic features, F-Secure would be a good solution for you. However, for more features such as password manager, file encryption, file shredding, and firewall booster, we would recommend you Trend Micro.
