Kaspersky Total Security 2018

Kaspersky Total Security 2018 is developed by a Russian multinational cybersecurity company, Kaspersky Lab. The company was established in 1997 and since then provides award-winning security products for both, individual users and businesses. Kaspersky offers four antivirus packages, according to users’ needs: Kaspersky Antivirus Free, Kaspersky Antivirus, Kaspersky Internet Security, and Kaspersky Total Security.[1]

Kaspersky Total Security is the most expensive tier from Kaspersky. It retails at about 100$ per year for five devices and has a free 30-day trial period.

Antivirus protection

Kaspersky uses same antivirus defenses for all its Windows products. In order to detect widespread known viruses and other malware, the antivirus applies digital-signature matching engine. Then the heuristic monitoring checks for suspicious malware in order to detect previously unseen zero-day malware. Each suspicious item is sent to Kaspersky Security Network for further analysis.

According to German independent test lab AV-TEST, Kaspersky demonstrated nearly perfect scored and detected 100% widespread and zero-day malware samples.

When it comes to additional features, Kaspersky Total Security offers one of the richest set of features in the market. It includes vulnerability scanner that scans for flaws and old software in the system, parental controls, password manager, system optimizer and many more. It also includes automatic backup software with 2GB of online storage space.

System-performance impact and scans

One of the downgrades of the security suite is its system-performance impact. During scans, it slows down the system by 30%. When it comes to scans, a full scan takes about 30 minutes, and a quick one takes 2 – 3 minutes.

User interface

The interface is bright and easy to navigate. All the main options are available on the main screen and are easily available. The interface is informative but does not look too much crowded.

The Final Verdict

Kaspersky Total Security is one of the best products on the market. It offers superior antivirus protection, rich and useful set of security and privacy features, including a VPN service, and parental controls. The main window cannot be resized or run full screen but can be moved around.

Feature Score
Antivirus protection Excellent
Additional features A great set of additional features and tools
System-performance impact Mediocre
Scans Scans are no longer than the market average and have a mediocre performance hit
User interface Bright and easy to use

Trend Micro Premium Security 2018

When it comes to Trend Micro Premium Security, the security suite is offered by a Japanese multinational cybersecurity company. Trend Micro develops and retails security software products and services for cloud computing, servers, businesses, and home users.[2]

Home users are provided with fourth versions of antivirus software, Trend Micro Antivirus and Security, Trend Micro Internet Security, Trend Micro Maximum, and Trend Micro Premium Security. Trend Micro Maximum and Premium security offer additional features, the only difference is that Trend Micro Maximum Security is able to protect up to five devices, and Premium Security protects up to ten devices.

Trend Micro Premium Security retails at $59.95 per year, so it is cheaper than Kaspersky Total Security. Trend Micro also offers 30-day trial version.

Antivirus protection

Just like Kaspersky, Trend Micro applies same antivirus defenses for all its Windows products. The defenses start with a malware-scanning engine that aims to detect already known threats and heuristic monitoring that looks for zero-day malware. Anything suspicious is sent to Trend Micro cloud servers for further analysis. In addition, the permission-based protection enables Trend Micro’d Folder Shield.

The antivirus also offers browser extensions that alert users about dangerous websites.

According to AV-TEST, Trend Micro detected 100% of known and zero-day malware samples.

The antivirus suite comes with licenses for Macs, Android devices, and iPhones and iPads. Even though Trend Micro provides users with data theft shield, parental controls, privacy scanner, system optimizer and more, it lacks a VPN service or webcam protection.

System-performance impact and scans

Trend Micro provides nearly perfect detection and removal scores. However, the detection engine has a big impact on a system. In addition, scans slow down the system up to 65%.

Full scan takes about 35 minutes, similar than Kaspersky.

User interface

The user interface is bright and open. Just like Kaspersky Total Security, the main window cannot be run full screen or resided, but it can be moved around.

Trend micro parental controls

The Final Verdict

Trend Micro Premium Security offers a reliable protection and a decent set of features at a very good priced. However, it has a noticeable impact on system performances and drains the system.

Feature Score
Antivirus protection Very good
Additional features Lack some privacy features
System-performance impact Heavy
Scans Scans are average, however, drain the system
User intervace Very light and simple

To summarize

According to the review, we would recommend Kaspersky Total Security over Trend Micro Premium Security. Kaspersky Total Security suite offers superior antivirus protection, a very rich set of features, only mediocre impact on a system and average speed scans. However, Trend Micro also offers great protection at a relatively low price, but it uses a lot of system resources and has a noticeable impact on performances during scanning processes.
